What is a pro forma invoice?

A pro forma invoice is a preliminary invoice sent before goods are shipped or work is done. Buyers use it to arrange payment, open letters of credit, and clear customs. It shows what will be supplied and at what price, but it is not a tax invoice, and it is not a demand for payment the way a final invoice is.
