About packing slips β what's in the box, on paper
A packing slip travels inside the box and answers one question: what is in here? It lists the items and quantities β ordered versus shipped β and deliberately shows no prices. The customer checks the delivery against it, and a short shipment shows itself honestly instead of hiding until the invoice arrives.
What a good packing slip includes
- Order number and ship date β so the slip can be matched to the order in one glance.
- Ship-to name and address β the same details that are on the label.
- Every item, with its SKU β names drift; SKUs don't.
- Ordered vs. shipped quantities β the column that turns "you shorted me" into a quick, calm check.
- A note about backorders β if part of the order ships later, the slip says so.
- No prices β that is the point; the invoice carries the money. (It also keeps prices out of gift deliveries and warehouse hands.)
A quick example
An order for fittings ships in two boxes. This slip rides in box one: two boxes of elbows, three pipe dope, a tape pack β all present β plus a note that the backordered fittings follow Friday. The customer checks six items off in a minute and knows exactly what is still coming.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Printing prices on the slip. It is not an invoice β keep the money off it.
- Skipping the shipped column on a partial shipment. Silence reads as an error; a note reads as service.
- No order number. An unmatchable slip is just paper in a box.
Packing slip questions
What is a packing slip?
A packing slip is the list that travels with a shipment: the order number, who it is going to, and every item in the box with its quantity. It shows ordered versus shipped so the customer can verify the delivery on the spot.
Why doesn't a packing slip show prices?
On purpose. The packing slip is a contents list for whoever opens the box β warehouse staff, a jobsite, a gift recipient. Prices live on the invoice, which goes to whoever pays. If you add the invoice number, this slip points to it.
What if part of the order is backordered?
Enter the ordered quantity and the quantity actually shipping, and add a note saying when the rest follows. The gap between the two columns tells the story honestly, before the customer has to ask.
